The award-winning national museum of the British Empire.

The British Empire & Commonwealth Museum is the only museum in the world dedicated to presenting the dramatic history of Britain’s 500-year colonial history. The incredible story of Britain's overseas empire is told through exciting displays, using film, video, sound, authentic artefacts and family-friendly interactive exhibits. Sixteen permanent galleries take you on a tour of world history that explains who we are and how Britain became today’s multicultural country.

There are regular changing exhibitions. Currently occupying the entire top floor of the Museum is ‘Breaking the Chains’, a £1 million Heritage Lottery funded exhibition about the abolition of Britain’s slave trade. There are large family events staged during school holidays and regular arts and crafts days take place at weekends.
