The reserves consists of sea and seabed surrounding the island up to the high water mark. This includes sea caves, sandbanks and some of the finest examples of rocky reef in the UK.

There is a huge diversity of marine life, including many warm water animals and plants at the northerly limit of their range and an important breeding colony of grey seals. For staying visitors there are weekly talks, wildlife walks, rocky shore rambles and in the summer snorkel safaris.
