Things to Do: Beaches
The beaches at Portland Harbour are small and secluded. They are sat on a spit, similar to Chesil Beach. Castle Cove is a small privately owned sandy beach backed by cliffs. Sandsfoot is very tranquil and popular with locals. It is set in the shadows of the ruins of Sandsfoot castle and gardens.
Paignton Sands Beach, Paignton, Devon (South Coast)
This stretch of red sandy beach is situated on either side of Paignton Pier
It is backed by an area of parkland which is used for various activities during the summer season and is often associated with the nearby Festival Theatre.
A sandy/rocky beach situated just across the Tamar from Plymouth. Very popular with families despite the steep paths that lead down to it. There are numerous rock pools to explore and play in. The east side of the beach is good for surfing although it is recommended for use by experienced surfers.
The sand and shingle beach at Babbacombe is popular for sailing and fishing off the breakwater. The sheltered conditions and easy access to the water have also made it extremely popular with the diving community.
Fine beaches stretch continuously for 3 miles from South Haven Point to the Chalk cliffs of Handfast Point and Old Harry Rocks, and include Shell Bay and a designated naturist area.
